Councillor tiff hits Ambattur
Squabbling between the ruling AIADMK and opposition DMK councillors continues to affect work to be taken up at Ambattur area, which was recently merged with the city corporation.
The corporation has sanctioned Rs 113 crore to develop Ambattur zone, but the reactions from ward representatives are not encouraging, said corporation employees attached to Ambattur zone.
Most regular civic work with low budgets is usually discussed at the zonal level meetings and the work is taken up by the zone officials in concurrence with the ward committee.
Now with the ward committee, headed by DMK councillor Joseph Samuel, failing to attain quorum, the meetings are annulled and the proceedings are forwarded to Ripon building for clearance and then carried out.
This affects the pace of work, said official sources. “Residents of Ambattur reel under sewer overflow, suffer sleepless nights because of mosquito menace and the stench from piled up garbage, but this does not move the councillors,” lamented G. Narayanan, a resident of Ambattur.
DMK floor leader in the city corporation Subash Chandra Bose said that the issue was recently taken up with corporation commissioner P.W.C. Davidar. He alleged that as the local chairman is of the DMK, the AIADMK is delaying holding of zonal meetings.
A senior corporation official denied that the civic works were delayed. “We are not able to take up major work but other road repair work and routine civic issues are taken up regularly. As we are aware that the ward committee has become ‘defunct’ files are sent to Ripon Buildings for approvals and subsequently work orders are issued,” the official said.
