Veteran Communist leader N. Varadarajan, 87, died Tuesday morning following a heart attack, a day after he withdrew from party duties at the CPM national conference in Kozhikode citing age and illness. He had joined the party in 1942.

The trade union leader is survived by wife Jagatha and sons Kalyana Sundaram and Bharathi.
Varadarajan, who twice represented Dindigul and once Vedasandur in the legislative Assembly, did not own a house. He would always wear a spotless cotton shirt and a broad smile and was state CPM secretary from 2002 to 2008.

Terming his loss “irreparable”, many CPM leaders recalled Varadarajan as a calm man who took considered decisions in difficult times.
