CPM now bats for inter-caste marriages
Marxists will now not only take up people’s causes such as the ever-rising prices but will also reach out to the youth by helping lovebirds.
Young people opting for inter-caste marriages and facing objections from their parents can now turn to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for help.
“We will counsel the families and even provide protection to the young couples,” G. Ramakrishnan, the CPI (M) state secretary told Deccan Chronicle.
District committee offices in the state have helped many couples, Ramakrishnan pointed out. “We reach out not only to our party members but also to others and encourage inter-caste marriages,” he said. “We have observed that both in urban and rural areas, parents still object to marriages out of their caste.
There are cases of honour killings where parents and other close relatives turn murderers. We want to put an end to this cruel practice,” he said.
Ramakrishnan, however, clarified that the campaign is not against arranged marriages.
The party would organise peaceful seminars and counseling sessions for parents and other elders to agree to the choices of their children.
“Unlike protests and agitations for day-to-day issues, we would conduct community-level programmes to spread the message on inter-caste marriages to parents,” he said.
