Cyber cops nail copycat medicos’ role
The interim report of the cyber cops of Chennai police on hi-tech copying by students of Stanley medical college during their examination, submitted to Dr MGR Medical university, says nine students received answers from two juniors through hearing devices connected to their mobile phones. “We need to probe further to gather evidence,” a senior city police officer said.
Nine final-year students were found copying in the MBBS part-II examination in February 2012, using their mobile phone and blue tooth accessories. After the initial round of probe, the police found two second-year students helping their seniors by reading out the answers through the mobile phones.
One student of Stanley medical college had informed the college authorities about the copying. The same student submitted the list containing the names of the students who had indulged in copying.
The university immediately convened a meeting of the examination disciplinary committee for an enquiry. Explanation was also called from the dean of the college. Since hi-tech devices were used, the university approached the cyber crime police for help.
“We conducted enquiries with all the students concerned. But there was some problem in getting the students for enquiry. Though the medical university is very keen on exposing the students, not all officials in the college cooperate,” a police officer said, indicating that some officials at Stanley medical college are not for proceeding further with the case.
The results of the students concerned were withheld and the university had given directions to fix mobile phone jammers and also to scan the candidates with metal detectors before they enter the examination halls.
