DC impact: Civic body covers stormwater drain
Corporation officials swung into action and covered an unfinished stormwater drain with a huge wooden plank in SBI colony, Shanti Nagar, Perambur, that had been left open for several weeks, after Deccan Chronicle highlighted on Tuesday the threat posed to pedestrians.
The stormwater drain work had been completed a few weeks ago, but the civic authorities had not bothered to cover the drain.
As it is a school zone, people feared sending their children to school as they had to negotiate the uncovered drain that had iron rods protruding from the edges.
Even a few motorists who were caught unawares of the trench had fallen into the drain that is located near the intersection of an arterial road and injured themselves.
Following the DC report in its August 21 issue, Corporation officials on Thursday covered the drain.
“We are happy that the officials have covered the drain at one place that was highlighted in DC, but they failed to cover the pit near the drain that is still uncovered in a few places,” said the residents.
