Deadline set for water projects

Augmentation of the city’s water supply sources got a fillip on Monday with the state government setting a deadline for some of the related projects under implementation.

Presenting the financial report 2012-13 in the Legislative Assembly this morning, state finance minister O Panneerselvam said the formation of a new reservoir of one tmc ft capacity in Thervaikandigai in Tiruvallur district at the cost of Rs 330 crore is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

The government also promised to take up the new storage capacity in Tirukandalam in the current fiscal.

While stating that works to augment existing capacity through restoration of Nemam, Porur and Iyanambakkam tanks and deepening of Cholavaram tanks at the cost of Rs 130 crore was under progress, Mr Panneerselvam said the works to improve water supply in added areas like Tiruvotriyur, Maduravoyal, Ambattu, Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam, Nerkunram, Alandur and Porur are also under progress.

Apart from allocating Rs 566.35 crore for improving water supply in 7,000 rural habitations in the coming fiscal, the state government allocated Rs 730 crore in this current financial year for ongoing Hogenakkal combined water supply scheme.

Rs 300 crore had been allotted for waterways Like his predecessors, Mr Panneerselvam also laid thrust on protecting Chennai waterways by proposing a new Rs 300 project to plug 337 outlets that discharge sewage into Chennai city waterways.

Referring to the 45mld Tertiary Treated Reverse Osmosis Plant being constructed at a cost of Rs 90 crore in Koyambedu, he pointed out that more such projects would be implemented under the public private partnership mode for recycling sewage to meet industrial need.
