Deepavali festive rush

There won’t be a sea of anxious faces waiting for buses at the Koyambedu terminus in Chennai to get to their native places ahead of Deepavali this year.

Thanks to the chief minister’s initiative, 6,859 special buses will be catering to the festival rush across the state, including 2,850 special buses from Chennai to district capitals and other parts of the state from November 9 to 12.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has instructed that special buses be operated four days ahead of Deepavali (November 13) from Chennai to important towns and all district headquarters’ and vice versa, Transport Minister Senthil Balaji said in an official release on Sunday.

The State Transport Corporation will operate 768 buses on November 9 from the Koyambedu Moffussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) to several destinations while 633 buses will leave on November 10.

Also, 543 buses will be operated on November 11 and 884 buses on the eve of Deepavali, November 12, said Mr Balaji, adding that the same number of buses would be operated to Chennai post Deepavali from November 13 to November 16

to facilitate hassle free return for commuters from their native places. This apart, special buses will ply in other parts of the state as follows: Nov.9 925, Nov.10 940, Nov.11 -977 and Nov.12 1189.
To facilitate easy ticket bookings STC has opened 16 special reservation counters at Koyambedu. Passengers can book e-tickets for buses plying beyond 300 km at the government's website http://www.tnstc.in, said the minister said.

He also warned that action would be taken against omni buses that fleeced commuters. “Commuters can lodge their complaints regarding omni buses at the complaint cell (04424794709) which will be operational till November 12 in Koyambedu,“ he said.
