Dip in TNYC membership upsets Rahul
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi has deputed his close aide and secretary Sachin Rao after the Youth Congress (YC) statewide membership drive failed miserably this year.
According to informed sources, a meager 89,000 people have been enrolled in the state YC this year, as against the figure of 14 lakhs claimed two years back.
Party insiders attributed the fiasco to lack of coordination between the All-Indian YC leadership and state units of YC and TNCC.
Senior state YC functionaries, cutting across factional differences, faulted the election authority of the Indian Youth Congress for acting unilaterally and not coordinating with the state YC. TNCC was also kept in the dark about the YC membership drive.
Even as Mr Sachin Rao had a brainstorming session with returning officers of the state YC at Satyamurthy Bhavan on Saturday, senior YC functionaries did not mind revealing to DC that both TNCC chief B.S. Gnanadesikan and state YC president M. Yuvaraja have written to the party national high command expressing dissatisfaction over the attitude of election authority, which, they claimed, had cost the party big time.
A startling testimony to the failure was the single digit membership recorded in districts like Dharmapuri, where only one person was enrolled.
Only 24 members were enrolled in Ramanathapuram this year. While IYC general secretary Jothimani argued that the three-stage membership comprising fresh enrolment, renewal and post election membership, should be viewed in parts, state YC president M.Yuvaraja said they were not even consulted in respect of the membership and the election authority seldom got in touch with them.
Union ministers from the state and senior state YC and TNCC functionaries were learnt to have advised against conducting the YC membership at this juncture as a massive reshuffle of the TNCC was on the cards.
