Doctors pulled up for botched surgery
Gynaecologists from a private hospital in the city have been pulled up, after it was found that they had allegedly left a paper napkin in the uterus of a patient during a cesarean surgery six months ago.
A police complaint has been filed, and the couple is pressing charges against the private hospital in Tondiarpet .
The lady doctor who performed the surgery has also reportedly approached the Tondiarpet police ‘out of fear for her life’, alleging that the patient’s family threatened her.
Thirty-year-old Ajitha had been suffering from severe stomach pains ever since she had a C-section to deliver her baby six months ago.
According to her advocate Thangavelu, she was so ill with frequent bouts of vomiting and dizziness, that she has been unable to breastfeed her baby. “
The couple went back to the hospital where the surgery was performed; but doctors sent them away, assuring the woman that the pains were normal after a C-section.
Finally, she went to a different hospital last week. A scan revealed that there was a foreign object in her uterus,” he explained.
Ajitha was taken in for another surgery, and doctors removed a paper napkin from her innards. The napkin had resulted in infection, and perforation of her uterus tissue, the family alleged.
A case has been registered, but the hospital has promised to issue compensation to the woman. “The hospial admitted that they had left the napkin inside the patient, and promised that they would take care of all further treatment expenses,” the lawyer added.
