Medical experts in the city have cautioned youngsters on the ill effects of using drugs and substance abuse.

People normally get addicted to drugs because of lack of self-control and excessive social restrictions.
“To find illusive freedom, they try to break out of societal control and fall prey to drug addiction.

The awareness should begin at the school-level itself so that youngsters are well informed about such issues,” said eminent psychiatrist Dr Rudran, while addressing a meeting at Sri Ramachandra University on the occasion of Anti-Narcotics Day.

At the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, several students from Madras Medical College joined the anti-narcotics club and pledged to fight against drug abuse.

“More than 90 per cent of the smokers become victims of lung cancer. Once someone begins to smoke, drink or use drugs, it is difficult for them to get out of the habit. So it is essential to exercise self control always,” said the dean, Dr Kanagasabai.

The Chennai zonal unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau, in association with Wisdom Hospital, organised a road march against drug abuse at Marina Beach with placards depicting the ill-effects of drug abuse.

refrain from drug use, youth told

The public, especially the youth, should fight against drug abuse and dedicate themselves to eradicating this menace from society, said Md.

Badhusha, the assistant commissioner (excise), at a function organised here by the district administration to mark the International day against drug abuse on Tuesday.

Badhusha spoke at length about the ill-effects of drug abuse and appealed to the youth to refrain themselves from using drugs, which is a social evil.

Dr Murugesan, a physician, said that people in the age group of 18-35 years are more susceptible to the habit of drug abuse and should realise that they may damage their health if they become addicted to intoxicating drugs.

Addiction to drugs would bring down immunity levels and this would make the addicted people become more prone to a variety of diseases, he said.
