Chennai Corporation commissioner and district election officer D. Karthikeyan on Monday released the draft electoral roll at the Ripon buildings for all the sixteen assembly constituencies here.

Releasing the roll, the commissioner urged the youngsters attaining the age of 18 years to enroll their names for the electoral photo identity card and other voters to fill in the claims and objections related to the draft roll.

Though there are two more years for the 16th Lok Sabha polls, it is a regular phenomenon to revise the voters’ roll.

The revision works have commenced based on the notification letter from the chief electoral officer and the revision will take four months time for completion, a corporation official said.

As per the draft electoral roll, district has a total of 34,27,473 voters of which 17,17,979 are men, 17,09,003 women and others 491.

Perambur continues to top the list as constituency with maximum voters (2,56,661 voters), followed by Velachery with around 2.5 lakh voters.

Harbour, with 1.6 lakh voters, had the least number of voters and was closely followed by Royapuram with 1.7 lakh voters.

The high profile constituencies like Kolathur and Chepauk – Triplicane had a voter population ranging between 2 to 2.2 lakh. Reserve constituencies Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Egmore were at the bottom of the list with less than 20 lakh voters.

Three special camps will be held at chosen centres on Sundays (October 7, 14 and 21) for inclusion and deletion of names in the roll. Draft electoral roll will be updated and the supplementary list will be readied by the end of December 2012.

After scrutiny, the final electoral roll will be released on January 5, 2013, sources said.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
