Dry weather to continue in state

Met department officials said on Wednesday that the dry weather conditions are expected to continue for another week in Tamil Nadu.
Stating that the state has so far recorded 29 per cent deficit rainfall this season, Dr Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), said, “There were rains in the middle of July, but the last week was dry and so the deficit has increased.”
In Chennai, Nungambakkam received 79.9 mm rainfall against the normal rainfall of 106 mm till July end, while Meenambakkam registered 93.5 mm rain against the normal of 118 mm.
According to Met department statistics, Nungambakkam recorded seven rainy days in July while Meenambakkam recorded five rainy days.
Dr Raj added that the rains would be subdued for a few more days in the plains and plateaus.
“Only hilly regions such as Gudalur will get rainfall, while a few parts of northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai will get slight rainfall,” he said.
Astro meteorologist Mr S. Ramachandran, meanwhile, said that rains were around the corner.
“As per planetary alignments, we are really getting into the monsoon position now.”
He added that the city would start receiving rains from August 2 and 3 and the real quantum of rainfall would be recorded between August 7 and 15.
“Towards the end of the month, we will get more rains," he predicted.
