E-books outshine traditional formats
With the advent of modern e-book readers like Amazon Kindle and smart phones like iPhones, which could store hundreds of electronic books, several youngsters have started downloading e-books rather than buying conventional books.
N. Aakaash, a third-year Electronics and Communication engineering student at VIT University, who downloads e-books and stores them in his smart phone, said, “This century is the era of electronics, from cooking to reading books, the scenario is changing day by the day. Among youngsters, the habit of buying hard copy of books has got replaced by soft ones (e-books). Many of us in college download semester textbooks as e-book (PDFs and PowerPoint presentations) rather than borrow the hard copy from the library.”
Pointing out that smart phones and laptops have made things easier for bookworms, Aakaash said book publishers should also upload a copy of their books online Amazon. “You have to give the option to book-lovers to choose their method to read books,” he said.
E-book readers list a lot of advantages, they are portable with vast storage space and save a lot of wardrobe space in the house or hostel room.
N. Venkatakrishnan, a final-year Electrical and Electronics engineering student at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchy, said several libraries in the world had started lending e-books, which help busy people borrow books at their ease. “Even though several people say e-books are not user-friendly, I think with the advent of latest software, we can overcome issues of readability,” he said.
