Eve-teasers beware, cops are on to you

Beware eve-teasers and chain snatchers. The Chennai city police is all set to introduce a citizen-centric facility as part of the proposed integrated traffic management system (ITMS) by which a switch box attached with a video camera will be a fitted at all arterial traffic junctions in the city.

In case of any emergencies or disturbance of law and order situations, including eve-teasing and chain-snatching, people can convey the message instantly through the system that will enable personnel in control rooms to alert the patrolling teams at other junctions, besides all police stations.

This service will facilitate road users to report to the authorities even about issues like eve teasing or chain snatching, besides traffic related complaints.

“Public can inform or register complaints on events that take place on roads or if they come across any loutish behaviour by mischief mongers, through the boxes placed at junctions,” Mr P.N. Mahadevan, managing director, purple infotech limited, which had recently inked an MOU with Chennai police to build-operate the Rs 117 crore ITMS system, told this newspaper.

When a complaint is registered, the personnel in control room would pass it on to the patrol team in the vicinity and ensure swift action. “The video camera would prevent pranksters from misusing the facility as the image of the complainants would get registered in database.”

This apart, ‘variable message display’ boards would be placed at all traffic junctions, which will display traffic update messages based on the status prevailing at the junctions ahead. “Based on the messages, motorists could avoid proceeding further if there were any traffic jam or road cuts ahead.”

The authorities have also taken care to avoid implementing ITMS scheme at the junctions nearby where the metro rail works are underway.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
