Fire department gears up for Deepavali emergencies
While the Fire and Rescue department has kept over 1500 firemen ready to handle emergencies during Diwali celebrations, the police has issued “dos” and “don’ts” while bursting the crackers.
According to fire officials, most fire tenders from the 33 fire stations in and around Chennai will be stationed in public places from Sunday evening onwards to make sure the responses are fast in case of incidents of fire. “Over 1500 firemen are kept ready 24 hours to fight mishaps,” the official added.
The Fire and Rescue department has been conducting fire safety awareness for the last one week at schools across the city and other public places.
The Chennai police meanwhile has already told residents to burst crackers only between 6 am and 10 pm, quoting a Supreme Court order.
Crackers with sounds of more than 125 decibel can’t be used. The police has also asked people to avoid bursting crackers in public places and to avoid loud crackers near hospitals and nursing homes.
People should also not burst crackers near motor vehicles and near where fuels are stored. “Don’t cover crackers in tin boxes and light them, as it may cause serious explosions. Avoid heating wet crackers on stoves or ovens in the kitchen as it may cause major disasters,” the police added.
Parents should supervise their children while bursting crackers, read the police advisory adding that crackers should not be burst near cattle as they may run wildly in fear and cause accidents.
Firecracker sellers have been asked not to use candles, chimney lamps and petromax lamps in their shops.
