Fisheries varsity in Nagapattinam soon
State animal husbandry minister T.K.M. Chinnayya on Monday introduced a bill to establish a new fisheries university at Nagapattinam taluk.
Introducing the bill to further amend the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Act, 1989, Mr Chinnayya said the bill sought to make certain consequential amendments to the Act to give effect to chief minister J. Jayalalithaa’s announcement in the Assembly on September 13, 2011, to set up a fisheries university at Nagapattinam.
Further, fisheries minister K.A. Jayapal introduced the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Act, 2012, bill to establish the university for the development of fisheries and for furtherance of advancement of learning, research and extension activities in fisheries sciences.
Accordingly, the fisheries colleges and research institutes in Thoothukudi, Chennai, Kanyakumari, and Thanjavur, would be transferred as constituent colleges and institutions of the university.
