Fishermen displeased with oil pipeline plan
Fishermen of Tiruvallur opposed the plan for a 17-km-long pipeline to transport crude oil from Chennai port to the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) refinery in Manali.
The fisher folks have registered their opposition in the public hearing presided over by Tiruvallur collector Ashish Chatterjee held in Tiruvottiyur on Tuesday.
The CPCL has proposed to lay the new pipeline in order to meet the requirements of its Manali refinery.
At the public hearing that was held in order to gain the Coastal Regulatory Zone clearance for the plan from Ministry of Environment and Forest, most of the participants, particularly, fisher folks opposed the project.
“Laying of the pipeline along the North Chennai coast is most dangerous as the areas are prone to sea erosion.
There will be considerable damage if a tsunami or cyclone occurred,” said K. Bharathi, president, South Indian Fishermen Welfare Association.
