Flyover woes for pedestrians in city
The on-going flyover work at Thirumangalam on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai has made life for pedestrians and motorists miserable.
The Thirumangalam junction happens to be the gateway to the western parts of the city like Mogappair and Ambattur and a majority of the MTC buses stop there.
There are several pedestrians who thus come here from different parts of the city to catch buses.
The on-going construction has reduced the carriage width of the road which makes it difficult for pedestrians to negotiate heavy traffic in the absence of pavements which have been removed.
While traffic diversions were made in the stretch, the Highways department has failed to make any arrangement for safe movement of pedestrians.
A pedestrian, Mr G. Saravanan said, "The junction witnesses traffic congestion in the evenings. The carriage width of the road is small and vehicle flow heavy. Crossing the road is very dangerous."
Motorcyclist Mr K. Jai Ganesh said, "Every day I travel through the area and have been facing trouble for the last couple of months. It is especially difficult during evening peak hours to."
A highways department official said they would look into the complaints of the pedestrians. "Once the flyover work is completed, the movement of traffic will become smooth," he said, adding that besides the flyover, a service road would be laid on both the sides of the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai along with pedestrian pathways.
"We will also take up construction of a pedestrian subway at the Anna Nagar Second Avenue Road simultaneously with the grade separator work," the official said.
