Four women hurt in balcony collapse
Four women were injured when the balcony of a second floor apartment in a block in a slum clearance board colony at Sathyavani Muthu Nagar in Otteri collapsed early on Tuesday after heavy rains.
The injured, who have been identified as Sethammal, 70, Saroja, 70, Rakamma, 69, and Philomina, 18, have been admitted to Kilpauk Medical College.
The accident has dealt a severe blow to Philomina, whose marriage is scheduled for next month, according to a neighbour. “Her leg has broken in the mishap,” said the neighbour.
The colony, which was established three decades ago, has more than 300 tenements that are in bad shape.
Chennai mayor Saidai Duraisamy and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar legislator Neelakandan visited the place and had to face irate people who were irked over the poor maintenance of the tenements and the poor sanitation standards. The people sought the mayor’s intervention to remedy the situation.
A few youngsters in the locality also reportedly confronted Neelakandan and alleged that the government had neglected their locality. Saidai Duraisamy pacified the people by saying that the legislator had sanctioned `31 lakh from his area development fund to repair the tenements.
