Funds released to improve roads

Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered the upgradation of roads and bridges in the state including bridges for the electricity board as part of the state government’s efforts to improve the infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.

Ms Jayalalithaa has increased the share amount to be given to the state electricity board from Rs 6 crore to Rs 7.9 crore to facilitate the construction of two-way bridge across the Cauvery at Odapalli between Namakkal and Erode districts.

Apart from asking the officials to ensure the bridge was widened to 7.5 metre from 4.5 metre, Ms Jayalalithaa ordered the upgradation of the 1.8 km-long Javanbhavan-Kammiyampet Road in Cuddalore for Rs 1.3 crore.

Besides, the damaged causeway between Karur-Vangal Road and Nagapattinam-Koodalur-Mysore Road will be renovated at a cost of Rs 12.5 crore.

“These initiatives will improve roads in the state apart from ensuring the traffic to flow smoothly and people can travel freely as they want,” the release said.

It may be recalled that the government under Ms Jayalalithaa recently finalised plans to construct bridges and subways at an outlay of Rs 231.68 crore to tackle traffic congestion in the suburbs of Chennai.

Three bridges and walkways will be built in south Chennai suburbs and also northern suburbs to ease traffic congestion at key junctions.

Also, she has allocated funds to implement several development works in urban areas. Of the total Rs 750 crore that has been allotted, Rs 500 crore will be utilised for corporations and municipalities barring Chennai and the remaining sum will be used for town panchayats.
