Gas leak fire claims woman’s life
In yet another incident of fire following cooking gas leak in the city, a housewife was killed and her husband and two children were seriously injured early on Tuesday morning at Muthamizha Nagar in Kodungaiyur.
The deceased was identified as Latha, 36, wife of Kathiresan, a grocery store owner. According to the police, Kathiresan and their two sons — Vinod, 11, (Class 5 student) and Vignesh, 7, (Class 3 student) — are battling for life in the hospital. This is the third such incident in the city in the last two weeks.
Kathiresan and family stayed in the rented ground floor portion of a building belonging to Arumugham. The owner and family stayed on the first floor.
On Tuesday, around 6.30 am, Arumugham’s wife Devi smelled cooking gas. She came down and asked Latha to check if the leak was from her kitchen.
As soon as Devi returned to the first floor house, she heard a blast from the ground floor. Some portion of the first floor was also affected.
“We saw the landlady asking Latha about gas leak smell and within minutes the blast and fire happened.
Latha was thrown off to the road in the impact of the blast. Most of the kitchen vessels were on the road,” said a woman staying in the same neighbourhood.
Latha fell on a two-wheeler parked a few metres away on the road. Neighbours who rushed to the street took all the victims to hospital.
Investigators believe that the gas leaked from the cooking gas cylinder that had accumulated in the kitchen overnight could have exploded when Latha switched on the kitchen light.
