GH morgue work delay irks experts

While the morgue at the Royapettah Government Hospital (RGH) is under renovation since April, the one at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital continues to stagger under the huge load of bodies coming in for autopsy.
“They told us that the renovation works would be completed soon but it is progressing at a very slow pace. It is also difficult for us to go back and forth from Royapettah to Kilpauk to complete the autopsies every day. It just adds to our stress,” complained a forensic expert from Royapettah.
The air-conditioning at the RGH was several decades old and had developed problems over the past few months.
With frequent power cuts in the city and lack of proper air-conditioning, the hospital staffers were often unable to conduct autopsies properly.
Following the Health department’s decision to improve facilities in the morgues at all government hospitals in the state and to provide proper air-conditioning, renovation works began at the RGH a week back.
All the autopsies that were to be conducted at RGH are now being done at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, there is an acute shortage of forensic experts and junior doctors prefer not to join the department as there is no remuneration.
Even if the government revised the allowance paid per autopsy, more doctors might prefer to do higher studies in pathology, said sources.
