Gifted kids need special education system: Expert
With India joining the world’s other forward nations in providing high quality school education, Prof Taisir Subhi Yamin, a professor of gifted education and head of International Centre for Innovation in Education (ICIE) attached to Université Paris Descartes, France, says that three to 10 per cent of India’s school children have special skills that qualify them as gifted children and the government must nurture their skills with a special education system.
In an informal chat with DC education, Prof Taisir Subhi Yamin said governments need to create awareness among the general public, create a climate of acceptance and recognition that recognises these gifted, creative, and talented children as a valuable global asset.
“In many countries private players dominate education, as such you can find schools like Alpha in Chennai that know to take the initiative to educate gifted children”, he said.
Pointing out that gifted children need high quality education, Prof Yamin said that schools need to devise different teaching methods to cater to the needs of these gifted children.
“Gifted kids read faster, react faster and they have the right to a future befitting of their talents. In India, we must increase awareness about them”, he said.
International Centre for Innovation in Education in association with Alpha group of schools will be conducting the annual international conference to discuss methods of helping these gifted education and share best practices from around the world.
“We are planning to have the three day conference from January 26 in the city as we want stakeholders to attend the meeting,” he added.
