Gold ‘robbery’ solved
The city police arrested three persons, including the complainant, in connection with the ‘robbery’ of 2.5 kg gold reported on Thursday morning in Koyambedu.
Senthil Kumar, the custodian of gold coin distribution in the state who was operating from the Muthoot Fincorp office in Coimbatore, had staged a robbery along with his autorickshaw driver friends to cover up the swindling of gold coins in his office, police said.
“The robbery was meant to help him adjust accounts in his office in Coimbatore,” the police said on Friday.
Police arrested Kumar, as well as autorickshaw drivers Appadurai and Raj for being part of the conspiracy and recovered the gold coins that were taken from the head office.
The police solved the case after they found that Senthil Kumar had contacted Appadurai on his mobile phone many times just before he hired the autorickshaw.
“Appadurai was brought to the police station and Senthil Kumar’s colleague Ramanathan identified him. Ramanathan had no role in the entire conspiracy,” the police said.
“Though initially Senthil said that Appadurai was not the driver, he later confessed to the crime and said that he did it to adjust the shortage in accounts at his office,” police said.
The police said he had so far swindled more than 3 kg of gold and started his own finance company as well as a poultry farm in Coimbatore.
