Greens hail wall around forest
Wildlife activists in the city have lauded the recent government order to construct a compound wall around the Nanmangalam Reserve Forest near Tambaram. The wall would protect the flora and fauna of Nanmangalam like the Guindy National Park.
“The state government has given the Forest department a go-ahead to construct a concrete wall to protect the reserve forest from anti socials and intruders. Works in this regard will start in two months,” said Tambaram forest Ranger M.K. Gopinath.
The compound wall will surround the entire reserve forest of 320 hectares and its technical specifications are currently being studied by senior Forest officials, he said.
The total cost of the three-phased project would be around Rs 2.25 crore, he added.
“Nanmangalam is one of the pristine reserve forests located near the city and will enjoy additional protection when fenced. The fenced Guindy National Park is now free from anti socials.
With vacant lands being converted into real estate plots, the only option left is to demarcate and protect existing forest areas and it is a welcome move,” said Mr K.V.R.K. Thirunaranan, founder of The Nature Trust.
Spread over 300 hectares, Nanmangalam Reserve Forest is a home to several endemic and endangered birds and is a breeding spot for the Indian Great Horned Owl.
