HC dismisses pil on KKNPP power
The Madras high court on Wednesday dismissed a public interest litigation that sought a direction to the Union government to provide the entire proposed 2,000 MW power to be generated by the nuclear reactors at Koodankulam to Tamil Nadu because of the acute power crisis in the state.
“The petitioner did not even make any representation to the authorities concerned. It is a policy decision that has to be decided by the government.
Therefore, this court cannot issue any direction. Hence, the petition is dismissed,” said a division bench of Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam about the PIL filed by advocate J. Ramesh.
In his PIL, Ramesh submitted that the Tamil Nadu chief minister had painfully agreed to the commissioning of the plant despite stiff opposition.
The chief minister has also been making desperate requests to the Central government to sympathetically consider the demand of Tamil Nadu to provide the entire power generated by the Koodankulam project. However, the Central government has not responded to it.
“The people of Tamil Nadu deserve the entire share of power generated as they were facing a survival hazard,” Ramesh said.
