Hospital open, yet to function

The city corporation inaugurated a multi specialty hospital last month at posh Alwarpet, in south Chennai with much fanfare, but much to the dismay of the local residents, the hospital is yet to be thrown open for public use.
“Lack of medical officers and staff is said to be the reason for delaying the hospital operations and the hospital is now used for parking four-wheelers.
Alwarpet, where real estate prices skyrocket, does not have adequate government hospitals or primary health centres and, hence, the multi specailty hospital was constructed in the midst of corporate hospitals,” confidential sources said.
“The hospital, which has an emergency ward, is located on prime C.P. Ramasamy Road (ward 123 - zone 9) and was inaugurated on June 19, 2012. A day after its inauguration, the hospital was closed and the status continues,” rued S. Karthick, a local resident.
“With medical expenses at private hospitals soaring, I was hoping to check my blood pressure and diabetes levels frequently at this hospital for free, but there is no sign of this hospital opening,” said G. Seshadri, a senior citizen residing in Abiramapuram.
A senior corporation official denied that the hospital had been kept closed since its inauguration.
The medical officer assigned to the hospital is on emergency medical leave and, “we will overcome the problem in a day or two”. The public who approached the multi speciality hospital were referred to the nearby primary hospital. The hospital will be upgraded in a phased manner and serve its purpose, the official maintained.
