House ready for diamond jubilee
The historic Fort St George, where the Tamil Nadu Assembly is situated, will be witness to a rare event of the state Assembly celebrating its diamond jubilee on October 29.
A function to mark the occasion will be held on October 29 at the Assembly chamber in the secretariat, according to Assembly secretary A.M.P. Jamaludeen. Governor K. Rosaiah has convened a session of the Assembly on the next day.
Fort St George is back in the limelight for housing the 234-member Assembly after chief minister J. Jayalalithaa reversed the DMK’s decision to shift the Assembly complex to Omandurar estate.
The current 14th Assembly, dominated by AIADMK with a strength of 150 members, has debated several sensitive issues concerning Tamil Nadu including the Mullaiperiyar dam row with Kerala, the vexatious Cauvery and retrieval of Katchatheevu islet from Sri Lanka, and brought all the political parties together.
The principal opposition now DMDK has 29 members and the DMK is represented by 23 members.
The first Legislature was constituted on March 1, 1952, after the first general elections held in January 1952. C. Rajagopalachari was the chief minister then.
Ms Jayalalithaa stormed to power trouncing the DMK in the May 2011 elections and became chief minister for the third time.
