‘IAS aspirant’ cons 16 women
A 22-year-old man was arrested for duping 16 women of cash and gold by posing as an IAS aspirant and also making false promises of marriage.
Nithya, 29, a resident of Saidapet, had lodged a complaint with the commissioner of police that she was swindled of Rs 10,000 and 10 sovereigns by a person named Vidyuth, who had contacted her after coming across information about her on a matrimonial site, according to police.
Vidyuth had pretended to be an IAS aspirant and had sought financial aid for his studies after promising to marry Nithya.
To help Vidyuth, she offered him Rs 10,000 and 10 sovereigns. A few days later, Vidhyuth disappeared and when Nithya tried getting in touch him she found that his cellphone was switched off.
The cyber crime police found that the accused was a resident of Chokkanthangal village in Villupuram district and that his real name was Chakkaravarthy.
Police also learnt that Chakkaravarthy and his accomplice had been lodged in Madurai prison on charges of cheating a woman earlier in Madurai.
A special team from Chennai had gone to Madurai and interrogated the accused.
Chakkaravarthy confessed to having deceived 16 women who he contacted through matrimonial sites.
He revealed that he used several email ids and cellphone numbers to cheat women and that he periodically changed the number to ensure that he did not get caught.
The two were produced before Saidapet court and lodged in Madurai prison again.
Police recovered Nithya’s jewellery and handed it over to her.
“Women are easy targets for criminals online. They must never believe a stranger before verifying their identity. They must be cautious while posting profiles on matrimonial sites,” said a police official.
