Chief minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday took stock of the power scenario and directed Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to expedite Vallur, Mettur and North Chennai thermal power projects and ensure generation at the earliest.

Ms Jayalalithaa held a review meeting at the secretariat here in the wake of worsening power situation in the state following the steep fall in wind power generation on Wednesday.

After taking stock of the progress of ongoing power projects, she directed officials to speed up works on three projects, the 3 X 500 MW Vallur thermal power project and 600 MW Mettur and 2 X 600 MW North Chennai thermal power projects, an official press release here said.

The meeting was attended by finance minister O. Pannerselvam, electricity minister Natham R. Viswanathan, chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi, energy department secretary Ramesh Kumar Khanna and TNEB chairperson Rajeev Ranjan.

The wind generation fell by one third from 75 million units (MU) a day to 22.3 MU on Wednesday forcing Tangedco officials to go for unscheduled cuts in the state except Chennai.

The situation got worse because the fall in wind power generation had come at a time when some units of central power stations at Ramagundam, Talcher and Neyveli are shutdown for annual maintenance depriving the state of its share of around 1.000 MW, a senior Tangedco official said, expressing hope that windmill generation would pick up in the coming days as the wind season would last till the end of September.
