Jayalalithaa to leave for Delhi tomorrow
Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa will leave for Delhi on the morning of May 5 to attend the chief ministers’ meeting on National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC).
The CM would attend the meeting, to be chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and return on the evening of May 5 itself, an official release said on Thursday.
The much-awaited meeting assumes significance as Ms Jayalalithaa, her West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee and other non-Congress ruled state CMs had forced the centre to convene a separate meeting of NCTC.
She had opposed when the Centre wanted to discuss various matters on internal security, including NCTC at the CMs meeting held on April 16 and demanded a separate CMs meeting to discuss it.
“It is indeed unfortunate that without taking into consideration the views and sentiments of various state chief ministers, the constitution of NCTC is sought to be steamrolled into existence,” she had said in a letter to the PM.
Ms Jayalalithaa’s one-day visit to the capital has also evoked considerable political interest in the backdrop of both the Congress and the BJP busy finalising their nominees for the Presidential poll.
The CM who is yet to make her party’s stand, is expected to open consultations with leaders of political parties in the capital.
