Jayalalithaa’s dairy schemes up milk production
Asserting that the dairy development schemes have been formulated to ensure economic development of villages, state milk and dairy development minister V. Moorthy said owing to schemes implemented by chief minister J. Jayalalithaa milk procurement at Aavin which was 24.8 lakh litres per day last May had increased to 27 lakh litres per day now.
Addressing a conference of Milk Producers Societies’ 400 special officers from various parts of the state at Veterinary College here, Mr Moorthy said the milk procurement at society level which was 24.8 lakh litres per day last year had increased to 27 lakh litres per day now, thanks to the schemes.
He also lauded the officials and staff of the state government owned Aavin for their efforts in ensuring enhanced procurement.
Of the total procurement, 23 lakh litres milk per day is dispatched to district unions and after meeting the local requirements the district unions send about 10 lakh litres milk per day to the four feeder balancing dairy plants at Salem, Erode, Madurai and Krishnagiri to convert the surplus milk into products like power and butter.
On an average, Chennai receives 10 lakh litres milk per day. The minister directed the Milk Producers’ Cooperative Societies, which earned profit, to distribute bonus, dividend to the milk producers.
The special officers were told to advise milk producers on cattle feed, bank loans and artificial insemination and take action to revive dormant societies, register new societies.
