Jeppiaar arrested for wall collapse
The founder-chairman of the Sathyabama group of educational institutions, Jeppiaar, was arrested by police on Thursday in connection with the wall collapse that claimed the lives of 10 migrant workers in Kunnam near Sriperumbudur on Monday.
Jeppiaar, who was being treated at a private hospital in Egmore for high blood pressure, diabetes and swollen feet since Tuesday, was arrested early on Thursday by a police team led by Kanchipuram DSP V.R. Gajendra kumar on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Judicial magistrate Abdul Malik, who arrived at the hospital along with the police team, remanded Jeppiaar to judicial custody. At 4.30 pm on Thursday, Jeppiaar was discharged and taken to Vellore prison where he has been lodged.
Ten migrant workers from northern states were killed while building a 40-foot wall in the college on Monday.
Four persons, including Jeppiaars’ son-in-law Maria Wilson, were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the wall collapse.
Meanwhile, a seven year old boy died after he fell accidentally into the septic tank of the Pani Malar engineering institute run by the Jeppiaar group in Poonamallee.
Ajay Deshmukh, son of Ram Sai, a migrant labourer working at the construction site of the college, was playing at the site around 10.45 am on Thursday.
