Karunanidhi mum over Cabinet berths

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday refused to comment on staking claim to two Union Cabinet berths in the UPA government vacated by his party even as speculation of ministry reshuffle has been doing rounds for the last few weeks.
“I cannot say anything now,” he told reporters when asked whether the party would seek the berths vacated by his party MPs.
In the wake of Pranab Mukherjee stepping down as finance minister to contest the Presidential poll and the resignation of Virbhadra Singh following framing of corruption charges against him in the Himachal Pradesh court, speculation are rife on imminent Cabinet reshuffle.
After A. Raja and Dayanidhi Maran quit the cabinet in the wake of 2G spectrum controversy, DMK had not nominated any successor in their place.
Recently, DMK chief told reporters after the party’s executive committee meeting on June 22, that his party had not sought any berth in the Union Cabinet even though the party had vacated two slots.
When he was asked if the party would seek the finance portfolio after Pranab Mukherjee vacated it, he quipped, “Who will want finance when it is about to be empty?”
To a query on UPA nominee Mukherjee’s prospects at the Presidential race, Mr Karunanidhi said, “I have already said that Pranab Mukherjee’s winning chances are bright.”
