Karunanidhi slams Jaya over Lanka vote

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Friday hit out at his archrival and chief minister J. Jayalalithaa for claiming credit for herself on India backing the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at UNHRC.

In a statement issued here, Mr Karunanidhi said that three days after criticising the Prime Minister for his statement in Parliament on the US-sponsored resolution against Lanka, the chief minister has welcomed India’s stand in Geneva and thanked PM for it.

Taking a dig at the chief minister for saying that she had moved a resolution in the Assembly last year seeking economic sanctions against Sri Lanka, Karunanidhi recalled that she had also moved a resolution in April 2002 seeking extradition of slain LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran to India.

He said her government prevented movement of LTTE in the state and arrested LTTE supporters under the then POTA laws and charged her with misleading the people by saying that she had written to PM demanding that New Delhi back the resolution.

Taking exception to her description of his party’s activities as “drama,” the DMK chief recalled Jayalalithaa’s statement in 2009 saying civilian casualty was common, when the conflict between Lankan army and LTTE was at its peak, and that India did not have the power to stop the internal war. “Isn’t it a drama to conceal all those (facts) ?” asked the DMK chief.
