Kerala to dump garbage in TN
Having failed to find an in-house solution to the garbage crisis, the state government is toying with the idea of transporting city waste to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
Official sources said that the state government was in touch with a Salem-based fertiliser company for transporting garbage generated here. With the government's plan to dump the waste in abandoned quarries not taking off on the expected lines, authorities here believe that the Salem plan looks feasible.
However, the state government is yet to sign an agreement with the company. “We are currently holding discussions with the company officials.
Thrissur corporation and Kayamkulam municipality have similar projects,“ said an official.
Thrissur corporation had signed a three-month contract with a Salembased company last July.
However, the project has now run into trouble following objection from Tamil Nadu pollution control board.
“Now the contract has expired and we will renew it soon. The company charges `2700 per tonne of garbage for transportation. Our company stipulates removal of 400 tonne garbage in a week,“ said a top official of Thrissur Corporation.
Nearly 1 lakh tonne garbage is lying in various parts of the city posing serious health issues to the people.
