Kitchen gardens grow luxuriantly in Chennai
Kitchen gardens across the city are burgeoning as many Chennaities have started to make use of the available space to grow organic produce.
Most people with kitchen gardens said that they have managed to keep their households self-sufficient by growing vegetables and herbs that are needed in the kitchen.
Empty plastic bottles, red soil and little space in your balcony are the only materials that are needed to set up a kitchen garden. The concept has created a platform for consuming fresh farm produce that has zero concentration of pesticides.
Moreover, people say that vegetables that grow in the houses are better than the ones available in the market.
“We need to take the idea to the younger generation. Our kitchen waste is enough to make the soil for the plants more fertile. We need to segregate bio-degradable waste from non bio-degradable waste and collect in a separate bin along with soil. Over time we can use that soil for growing plants,” said S.S. Radhakrishnan, president, Good Governance Guards.
Students of Anna University have put up a vegetable garden stall to bring to light the advantage of growing farm produce.
“Vegetables that grow in kitchen gardens are more nutritious than what is available in the market. We put up the stall in our university to spread the concept of effectively using open spaces in our houses,” said K. Sudhan Raj, a student of media sciences at Anna University.
