Koyambedu to get new parking facility
The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) at Koyambedu is all set to get a multi-storied parking facility in the bakcdrop of the existing facility bursting at its seams.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), which administers the terminus, is contemplating construction of a new facility to handle more than 4,000 buses per day in addition to the existing parking lot.
A two-storied parking complex is proposed to be constructed beside the existing two-storied structure because of the sharp increase in the number of visitors over the years to more than two lakh per day that has led to a space crunch in the existing facility.
“We have recently floated tenders to identify an consultant for preparing a feasibility report to execute the additional parking facility at CMBT, besides the existing facility, which is now bursting at it seams,” said a senior official in CMDA seeking anonymity.
The facility is just 15 months old but the facility, which can accommodate 2,000 vehicles, had started facing space crunch few months after inception.
Parking in the facility has reached saturation point and resulting in haphazard parking of vehicles blocking the exit path of the buses. The official said CMDA would float a tender for constructing the new parking facility as soon as the consultant submits the report.
“The existing two-storied (basement and ground floor) facility is exhausted but there is a provision to build two more stories in the place,” said the official.
The existing parking lot was inaugurated in December 2010 to decongest the entrance for the buses, which jostle for space with two-wheelers and cars.
