LOL at humour clubs to destress
A decade back Mr L.N. Jayaraman, 50, from Adyar was suffering from severe mental stress due to his hectic work.
He developed headaches and was unable to concentrate on his work. His family members too started complaining about his behaviour.
Unlike many who would approach doctors for help, Jayaraman came to know about “Humour Club” in Chennai and joined it.
“I was positively motivated after attending the Humour Club sessions regularly. I used to share the jokes with my folks. I learnt the mantra to overcome stress. Now I am a happy person,” he said amid loud laughter.
Chairman of the club, Mr Seetharaman, said that the club was started with just 50 members in 1979. “Now we have 1,500 members in our Triplicane chapter alone.
The number of members increases every year. Over 2000 persons have enrolled in our four chapters in Chennai.
We are proud that film director K. Balachandhar is a lifetime member. And well known comedians Vivek and Charlie reached the big screen through our club.”
Mr Seetharaman added that the ultimate aim of the club was to promote humour among the students and public. “We identify and encourage new talents to our club. We work to relieve youngsters from mental stress,” he added.
The club also organises open sessions where members can tell jokes on stage and the best three are awarded.
The event also includes mimicries, mimes, mono acting and also skit.
