Mad scramble for place in co-operative societies
There is a scramble among even local political party cadres for enrolment as members to cooperative societies for which elections will be held soon.
Hopes have rebound for many functionaries on participating in this democratic exercise.
“Many Cooperative societies have become defunct and some including PACBs are in the red. Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa will ensure that all the cooperative societies function efficiently,” a senior AIADMK leader said. Cadres are excited over the prospects of seeing cooperative societies elections, he added.
The state government promulgated an ordinance this year to facilitate admission of members to cooperative societies, overcoming a 11-year ban on fresh inclusion to ensure that the co-operative sector functions in a democratic, manner.
This promulgation was in tune with the Centre’s appeal to the states to amend their cooperative societies Act as per 97th Amendment.
