Mambalam needs pavements

Arya Gowda Road, which bifurcates the West Mambalam area, is in desperate need for pavements.
Residents here complain that even the school zones are not spared from encroachments and students are prone to accidents as they have to walk on the roads.

Teachers say that the Corporation should at least start with the school areas.

There are three schools adjacent to the Arya Gowda Road with a total of 2,500 students and most of them have to walk on the road due to lack of footpaths.

“Students should be taught road-safety rules from the early years. Recently the Corporation had laid out speed-breakers and sidewalks, but they served no purpose. The platforms are too small and the city Corporation should take necessary steps near the school zones,” said Ms S. Jayalakshmi, a teacher attached to Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya.

“Considering that there are three-four schools in the locality, the Corporation must take extra care in ensuring the safety of the children. The Sri Sitaram Vidhyalaya Matric Higher Secondary School, which is located on the Arya Gowda Road, suffers the most as there are no proper platforms for the public to walk on,” said another private school teacher in Mambalam.

When contacted, a local Corporation official maintained that Arya Gowda Road would soon be reviewed for improvements. Storm water drains will be redesigned near the Mambalam Canal and subsequently the pavements would be improved. Hawkers were periodically evicted and more such drives would be undertaken, the official added.

They say

* The corporation evicts hawkers once in a year, but that doesn’t seem to bring in any respite for the walkers and sewage overflow also disrupts pedestrian movement –– P. Chandrasekaran, medical shop owner

* The side-walk in front of Ayodya Mandapam and nearby marriage halls are completely encroached by private generators and during peak hours there is no space to walk - R. Vidya, home maker
