Manual signal for better traffic flow

Next time you see the automatic traffic signal switched off during peak hours, do not panic. The city traffic police are experimenting with manual signaling at busy junctions for better flow of vehicles.
“Automatic signals cannot read the volume of vehicles from different sides and change signals accordingly, but traffic police personnel can and keep vehicles moving,” said a senior city police official.
After the new additional commissioner of police Karuna Sagar took charge a few days ago, the city traffic police wing decided stick to manually manning the road signal at least until the `100 crore integrated traffic management system that will manage the traffic intelligently on its own comes into place.
“Our idea is to keep vehicles moving. Motorists usually get irritated or frustrated if they are stuck in a jam,” another traffic police official said.
“Our men were told to find bottlenecks at the junctions and also between the junctions that cause traffic snarls. At the junctions, they will regulate traffic according to the volume of vehicles piling up on different sides,” said the official.
In the morning, if the vehicles pile up on one side, in the evening the piling up will be on the other side,” the official added.
Assistant commissioners and inspectors attached to the traffic wing were asked to keep travelling between busy junctions to make sure vehicles that are causing snarls are removed properly.
They will focus on removing hurdles such as vehicles that break down by coordinating with different agencies, the official said.
