MCA colleges lack faculty
About 75 per cent of standalone institutions that offer MBA and MCA courses affiliated to the University of Madras do not have a qualified director or faculty.
The university has given these institutions an ultimatum to fill these posts with qualified persons in six months if they do not want their affiliation to be withdrawn.
The University of Madras has 24 standalone institutions that offer only MBA and MCA and 25 other arts and science colleges that also offer management courses along with other ones, Madras University vice-chancellor Prof. G. Thiruvasagam told Deccan Chronicle on Thursday.
When the university urged these institutions to submit their faculty list it came to light that 75 per cent of them had under-qualified or irrelevant qualification.
“According to All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) norms, a director should have a Ph.D in management with 10 years of experience in teaching or industry. Directors and faculty in 75 per cent of these colleges do not conform to the qualifications laid down by AICTE,” he said.
The vice-chancellor convened a meeting with the secretary of all standalone institutions on Wednesday to discuss the issue. Representatives of several colleges said that it had become difficult for them to get qualified faculty and directors for management courses.
“We (the university) gave them an ultimatum that if they do not recruit qualified faculty and director within six months the university will withdraw the affiliation accorded to the college,” he said.
The university has also asked colleges to pay salary to faculty as prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The Madras high court in a recent judgement has made it clear that colleges should pay sixth pay commission salary as recommended by UGC, Prof. Thiruvasagam said.
