Men better than women in designing floral carpets

Men are far better than women in designing floral carpets. This was proved when a men’s team won not two, but consecutively for the last four years in the pookalam competition held as a part of Thiru Onam celebrations in a private school in Chennai.

A team named “Kolathur ICF friends,” comprising four men, won their fourth consecutive award in the contest.

Malayalis around the city participated in the pookalam contest organised in Chettinad school, a day before Atham and over 50 contestants were in the fray to lift the Manorama champion’s trophy on the day of the contest.

On Sunday, the auditorium was replete with vivid colours and the fragrance of flowers, arranged for the contest. It was very evident from the designs that each team had planned meticulously to make their flower carpets look unique. Floral patterns like dove, mountains, cow with calf, kathakali and peacock were eye catchers however all other pookalam looked stellar.

“We enjoy doing it, because we get a sense of satisfaction and happiness as it takes nearly two weeks of painstaking preparation to make it look great on the day of the contest,” said Mr P. Jayakumar, a winning team member. Even non-Keralities had fun in participating in the event. “There are so many people with different ideas and thoughts, this event is not just for Keralities, it is just amazing to be here,” said Vibhuti Sao, a participant.

Keralities across the world will be looking forward to their most auspicious festival, Thiru Onam. Which falls on the 29th of this month. The ten-day festival starts with atham (first day) and culminates with Thiru Onam on the tenth day.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
