Metro relief for motorists
The 100-ft Road from Kathipara to Koyambedu does not scare motorists any longer. Vehicle movement here is smoother and two-wheeler riders face less peril while manoeuvring between buses and cars on the busy road.
The arterial road is now wider than ever, thanks to the on-going Metro Rail work that resulted in clearing of many encroachments along the otherwise congested road.
Also, the road width has nearly doubled in some stretches like near Ekkattuthangal following the removal of barricades that fenced the Metro work sites.
Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has paid Rs 14.90 crore to the Highways department to give the road a facelift.
The Highways department will relay the road for about 6.5 km between the foot of the Kathipara grade separator and Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CMBT), senior CMRL officials told this newspaper.
CMRL has already completed works, cleared the work site and handed over about 3.4 km of the 6.5 km stretch it had occupied, officials pointed out.
The completed and cleared stretches include the road between SIDCO and Kasi Theatre Bridge and CMBT to Kiruba Colony.
Other roads like EVR Periyar Salai and Anna Salai, which have been occupied by CMRL for Metro Rail works, are also expected to get a facelift following work completion.
Separate estimates would be prepared and appropriate sums would be paid by CMRL to the Highways department upon completion of works on the other roads too.
