Min promises textbook review
With chief minister J. Jayalalithaa and several other political and community leaders protesting, the Union HRD ministry on Friday promised to look into the ‘wrong’ depiction of the Nadar community in a CBSE textbook.
HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju gave the assurance to his party colleague and shipping minister G.K. Vasan when the latter met him for discussing the issue. Raju told him he had sought details from his officials and would “definitely try to do the needful on this important issue,” Vasan said.
Earlier in the day, chief minister Jayalalithaa wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding removal of the objectionable references in the textbook about Nadars, a trading community concentrated in southern districts of the state.
“The social and economical development achieved by the Nadars over the years is commendable. Their success in the fields of education and business can be attributed to their hard work and determination,” she said.
