Misfired rocket kills 60-yr-old man
One person died in Thiruvotriyur in a Deepavali-related fire mishap, one of the more than 220 fire accidents reported in the city on Deepavali day, Tuesday, and on Monday.
At least 50 persons suffered minor injuries in firecracker mishaps in the city and were treated as out patients at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.
The thatched roof of a church building in Ambattur, the premises of a temple in Mambalam and a hut in Menambedu were among the buildings that were damaged in fires caused by firecrackers.
Most of the fire mishaps were results of misfired rockets, sources in the fire control room said.
At Thiruvotriyur, a misfired rocket fell on a thatched shed near the Vaduvudi Amman temple, causing a fire. A 60-year-old man, Kaliyamurthy, who was sleeping inside the shed was trapped while trying to the douse the fire.
Fire accidents caused by misfired rockets were reported from places such as a temple on Barrack Road in Kilpauk. In Avadi, at least four houses with thatched roofs were destroyed in a fire after a rocket was misfired from the neighbourhood.
This also resulted in a cooking gas fire. Fire and rescue service personnel rushed to the spot doused the fire.
Two coconut trees in Pattabiram and Madhuravoyil were also destroyed in a fire caused by rockets. At least eight huts were gutted in a similar fire mishap in Mangollai in Mylapore on Tuesday night.
