MLA’s aide in net for Rs 43L loot
The police has arrested a 27-year-old man, working as assistant to Thiruvotriyur AIADMK MLA Kuppan, in connection with the Rs 43 lakh robbery by men posing as income tax officials two weeks ago in Ernavur.
On May 21, four well-dressed men, who claimed to be from the income tax department, had reached the house of Kanagaraj, 55, in an SUV at 7 am and taken away Rs 43 lakh.
The accused had shown “identity cards” to support their claim that they were from the I-T department and began their search inside the house after asking Kanagaraj’s wife Jaya and daughter Priya to switch off their cellphones.
The “I-T” officials opened the bureau, took only the cash and left behind nearly 1 kg of gold worth more than Rs 25 lakh.
“We have arrested seven people so far in connection with the robbery. Today we arrested Selvam, 27, working in a MLA’s office, and Sowrirajan, 62.
Earlier on Tuesday, five men were arrested and Rs 33 lakh cash recovered,” the police said. Rs 1 lakh in cash was recovered from the two arrested on Thursday.
The police said Selvam had passed information to the robbers about the money kept in the house of Kanagaraj, a department store owner in Ambedkar Ernavur.
Those arrested on Tuesday, who included an associate of the four men who had gone to Kanagaraj’s house, were identified as Murugan, 56, of Periaypalayam, Jayavelu, 42, of Ernavur, Karthikeyan, 34,
from Thanjavur, Vijayendran, 32 and Maharaja, 23 of Kumbakonam. The police has also recovered the SUV that they had used.
