MMC students create awareness about dengue
As many as 500 medical, nursing and pharmacy students from Madras Medical College formed a human chain on Tuesday to spread awareness about dengue and its prevention.
“Placards depicting prevention of mosquito breeding, early recognition managements of patients suffering from the fever were displayed for the public. Pamphlets regarding the issue were also distributed,” said Dr Kanagasabai, dean of MMC.
He added that doctors at the hospital have been instructed to monitor patients who are admitted with fever round the clock. Dengue is caused by mosquitoes that breed in stagnated water, unused tyres, plastic items that gather dust, flower pots etc.
During the public interaction, doctors pointed out that in the case of dengue, it was not just about medical treatment alone; community participation in curbing the breeding of mosquitoes was also essential. It is important to maintain proper hygiene and keep surroundings clean in order to prevent the spread of dengue, the doctors pointed out.
If anyone shows signs of dengue, their blood samples are collected and sent to labs for testing, and treatment is initiated at government hospitals for those who test positive. “If people are suffering from high fever, joint pains and body ache, they should immediately approach a doctor,” said Dr Kanagasabai.
