Monsoon fury claims 20 lives in Tamil Nadu
Twenty persons have been killed during the two-day rains that lashed various parts of Tamil Nadu. Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, who reviewed the arrangements to tackle the northeast monsoon on Saturday, informed that the toll since the onset of the monsoon was 20 and ordered officials to provide `2.5 lakh each as solatium to the kin of the dead.
The victims, including women, were killed in incidents such as electrocution and lightning strikes, she said. Announcing the relief, Ms Jayalalithaa expressed her sympathies to the kin of the deceased.
She also announced `5,000 and `2,500, respectively, as compensation for the 38 huts damaged completely and 123 huts damaged partially. “I have also directed to provide 10 kg rice, a dhoti and saree each and one litre of kerosene to those who have lost their houses,” she said after reviewing the situation along with her senior Cabinet colleagues, including finance minister O. Panneerselvam.
Further, 112 farm animals had perished, she said, and announced `20,000 for those who had lost their cattle, `2,000 for owners of goats which had died and `100 for farmers raising chicken, as compensation. The CM asked ministers to visit their districts regularly and take stock of the situation, as rains are expected to continue till December-end.
